In this summer #CigarTalk we're taking a slightly different approach and looking at the world of cigars through completely fresh eyes. This time we sat down and talked to “a beginner in the world of cigars”, someone who is just entering this culture, still learning the rituals, the language and what actually makes the whole experience enjoyable. Can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
Miha Rudl: Hi, my name is Miha Rudl and I am 32 years old. I love to travel, especially discovering new places and cultures, spending time by the sea whenever I have the chance, and smoking cigars as part of a relaxed, mindful ritual. I also appreciate good company, because I believe that the best moments are always shared and shaped by the people around you.
His journey with cigars began a little over three years ago, when his father first introduced him to the world of cigars. What began as a simple moment of sharing quickly turned into a deeper curiosity about the culture and rituals behind it. Over time, that initial introduction developed into a growing interest, and he began researching different cigars and learning about their origins.
Do you have any favorites? vitolas a smoking cigar?

When asked how he pairs cigars with drinks like whiskey, champagne, wine or coffee, he explains that it largely depends on the moment and the cigar he chooses. For him, there is no fixed rule, but a feeling that follows the time of day and the occasion. In the evenings and on weekends, he prefers to pair cigars with a glass of whiskey or a Negroni, as he finds that these richer, more complex flavors naturally complement the slower pace of cigars. During the day, he leans towards something simpler and more focused, often enjoying a cigar with a well-prepared espresso, which he finds a natural pairing.
When it comes to food pairing, he believes that certain desserts can work particularly well with cigars. He specifically highlights chocolate as a great accompaniment, noting how its richness and subtle bitterness can harmonize beautifully with the depth and character of a cigar, especially when enjoyed after a meal or in a more relaxed setting.
What trends do you currently see in the cigar industry?
Miha Rudl: What I see is that the prices of Cuban cigars are rising rapidly due to higher consumer demand. Social networks like Instagram have, in my opinion, increased the number of cigar smokers.
Do you have a favorite brand of cigars and why that one?
Miha Rudl: That's a tough question. My favorite is Partagas, but I also really like Juan Lopez.
Which cut do you use most often?
Miha Rudl: I mostly use flat (straight) cut. I prefer it for its consistency and control, as it allows for a clean opening and ensures an even draw without overcomplicating the ritual. For me, it remains the most reliable and simplest way to prepare a cigar.
Have you ever smoked a cigar that you particularly remember?
“"The cigar I remember most is H. Upmann Half Corona, because it was the first cigar I ever smoked. Have I smoked better cigars since then? Absolutely. But this one stands out the most, because it marks the beginning of my cigar journey.” – Miha Rudl
He believes that a mentor is very important in the world of cigars. While some basic knowledge and advice can certainly be found online these days, he believes there is no real comparison to what a mentor can teach and demonstrate in person. For him, the value lies in the direct, practical guidance that only experience can provide.
A good mentor, he explains, can offer much more than just technical information; they can completely shape the way someone approaches cigars. In addition to practical advice, they also share personal experiences, stories, and subtle insights that can’t be learned from reading alone. In his opinion, that human element is what truly accelerates learning and deepens appreciation for cigar culture.
Which is the best? cigar lounge Which one did you visit?
Miha Rudl: So far I have only visited one, and that was in Zagreb, Havana 22 , which is an excellent place in my opinion.
Can you recommend a good cigar under €10?
Miha Rudl: Well, I think this is a bit of a complex question, because it depends a lot on the market where you buy your cigars. In Italy, for example, you can find Partagas or Romeo and Juliet Mille Fleurs for less than 10 euros. In Slovenia, however, the prices are significantly higher and it is difficult to find a good Cuban cigar below that price. That said, if you're open to New World cigars in Slovenia, there are some solid, more affordable options available. One that comes to mind is Zino Nicaragua, a well-balanced cigar that is also quite affordable.
How important is a good cutter, lighter and holster? Do you have any favorite brands?
Miha Rudl: They are very important. My favorite cutter for cigar is Elie Bleu Double Blade. As for lighters, I prefer Les Fines Lames Le Feu RS, mainly because of its flat flame. The cigar case I use most often is Les Fines Lames Duo Case, although I also like the newer model from Alestima. It has a special pocket for Boveda package, and the aluminum casing offers solid protection if you accidentally sit on it.
Do you have any advice for someone just entering the world of cigars?
Miha Rudl: One piece of advice I would share is the same one I received: try as many different cigars as possible. Explore options from Cuba, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Honduras and beyond. It's the best way to find out what really suits you in terms of taste.
